Cavalli College Celebrates NZQA Approval of Two New Early Childhood Diplomas

At Cavalli College, we believe in shaping futures, one learner, one child, one community at a time. Today, we are proud to celebrate a milestone that speaks directly to that vision: the official NZQA approval of our New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5) and New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 6) qualifications.

These two new diplomas reflect Cavalli College’s commitment to providing accessible, practice-rich, and deeply supportive pathways for those passionate about a career in early childhood in New Zealand and beyond.

“It’s about more than just study,” said General Manager Nicole Robins. “It’s about preparing learners to step confidently into a career where they can make a real impact in the lives of children and families. These qualifications are grounded in current best practice, driven by values, relationships, inclusion, and care. We are excited to serve our ECE sector like never before.”

Both diplomas are one-year, full-time programmes that blend theory, hands-on experience, and personalised support with NZ ECE and teacher education experts. Learners gain weekly classroom experience in quality ECE settings alongside professional placements designed to support pathway to teacher registration.

The Level 5 diploma introduces foundational teaching knowledge, exploring key educational theories, inclusive practices, and the building blocks of effective early childhood care. It’s a space where students grow in confidence, supported by lecturers and teacher mentors who walk alongside them every step of the way.

The Level 6 diploma takes that learning further, equipping student teachers with in-depth pedagogical understanding across core curriculum areas including literacy, mathematics, science, creative arts, and community engagement. It’s a transformative year designed to prepare learners to lead with intention, reflection, and care, and to be ready to move into the final year of a Bachelor of Teaching (ECE) programme of study.

From flexible blended learning options to responsive lecturer guidance on the strength of our authentic sector partnerships, Cavalli College has reimagined what it means to study teacher education.

“At Cavalli, students aren’t numbers, they’re people. People with aspirations, with challenges, with unique stories,” said Trish Thomas. “That’s why we’re so focused on wrap-around support and real-world learning. Because when our students thrive, the communities they serve thrive too.”

Assessments across both diplomas are designed to be meaningful and relevant, connecting theory with everyday teaching experiences. With intentional teaching strategies, updated curricula, and sector-informed teaching models, learners graduate prepared not only for employment but for contribution and a career that makes a difference.

New Zealand’s early childhood sector plays a vital role in shaping our tamariki, and the need for qualified, compassionate teachers has never been greater. With these newly approved qualifications, Cavalli College is offering learners, both local and international, a clear, supported pathway into a rewarding profession.

Graduates will be well-positioned to:

  • Work in early childhood centres and related services
  • Positively contribute to teaching teams and learning communities
  • Continue to higher study and teacher registration
