In 2022, Cristel Joy Manansala made a brave and life-changing decision. Encouraged by her cousin, who spoke of the opportunities in Aotearoa New Zealand, Cristel left her home country and arrived on a work visa, ready to build a better future.
Earlier this year, inspired by a close friend working in aged care, that journey took an exciting new turn as Cristel began studying the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Advanced Care and Support) (Level 4) online through Cavalli College. She realised her calling: to care for others with compassion and respect.
“What excites me most is being able to support others in a way that truly matters,” Cristel shared.
“I’ve become more passionate about this work every step of the way.”
For Cristel, like many international students, navigating work, study, and life in a new country hasn’t always been easy. But the flexibility of online learning and the unwavering support from Cavalli College’s teaching team have made all the difference.
“Studying at Cavalli has honestly been a life-changing journey for me,” she said.
“As an international student who’s also working, the flexibility of the course has been a huge help. What’s made it even better is the incredible support from the tutors.”
It’s this kindness and support that Cristel says helped her push through when things felt difficult.
“They’ve been so kind and approachable, always there when I’ve needed help or felt unsure. I never felt like I was on my own. Their encouragement helped me build confidence, especially in areas I struggled with at first.”
The programme’s focus on real-world skills, particularly around communication and care, has already had a strong impact. Although she hasn’t started her placement yet, Cristel feels well-prepared and supported, thanks to the college’s hands-on guidance.
“The course has been so practical and inspiring. I’ve learned so much about working with people from all walks of life. It’s built my confidence, and I feel ready for what’s next.”
Cristel’s long-term goal is to build a career in aged care and eventually apply for residency in New Zealand, a place that’s quickly become home.
“I’m genuinely proud of how far I’ve come. I would absolutely recommend Cavalli College to anyone, especially other international students, who are passionate about healthcare and want to build a meaningful career.”
Cristel’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible when learning meets purpose. Her journey, marked by courage and care, speaks to the heart of Cavalli College’s mission: to uplift learners through flexible, supported, and purpose-driven learning pathways.
