From taking a first step into study to landing a dream job: Andy's journey with Cavalli College

For Andy McGirr, studying with Cavalli College was more than an opportunity to gain a qualification; it marked the beginning of a transformative journey that strengthened his confidence, expanded his professional knowledge, and helped him progress towards his career aspirations.

Before enrolling with Cavalli College, Andy was employed by an organisation providing supported living services for individuals experiencing addiction and related challenges. Seeking to deepen his knowledge and enhance his ability to support others, he enrolled in Cavalli College’s New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) (Level 4) Mental Health and Addiction Support Strand. Following the successful completion of this qualification, he continued his learning journey by enrolling in the New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Peer Support) (Level 4).

“I wanted to increase my knowledge of addiction and addiction support,” Andy said. “The programmes gave me valuable insight into different areas of addiction and how to effectively support people experiencing challenges.”

Throughout his studies, Andy developed a deeper understanding of person-centred practice and the importance of collaborative support.

“One of the key takeaways I have learned through studying with Cavalli was being part of a multidisciplinary team and being able to work with different people and support them in their journey. Everybody is different, and they have different needs, so it was good to get an understanding of different angles to help people in their journey.”

Returning to formal study after an extended period away from education was a significant personal and professional achievement.

“Personally for me, being able to complete the course has been amazing because I haven’t studied for such a long time, so achieving the qualification has been quite motivating for me to take it further and just gives me a lot of confidence.”

A key benefit of the programmes was the opportunity to immediately apply new knowledge and skills within the workplace.

“During the Mental Health and Addiction Support programme, I was in a position where I could apply what I was learning to my existing job. It just really made me think about how I was interacting with people and dealing with their specific needs.”

This practical application continued throughout the Peer Support programme, even after Andy transitioned into a new role.

“Being able to apply what I was learning in my day-to-day work was incredibly valuable and helped reinforce everything I was studying.”

Andy attributes much of his success to the support he received throughout his learning journey.

“The support from Cavalli was amazing. The lecturers provided excellent feedback and clear guidance and direction on where you could improve. I hadn’t studied for so long, and they were so encouraging, supportive, and just amazing in general.”

The impact of his studies extended beyond academic achievement. Through the knowledge, skills, and professional connections gained during his time with Cavalli College, Andy was recommended for a role that aligned closely with his career goals.

“The qualifications opened doors to new opportunities, but I’m especially grateful because Cavalli recommended me for my current position, which is pretty much my dream job, so I have Cavalli to thank for that.”

Today, Andy is looking to the future with renewed confidence and is considering further study at a higher level.

“Looking back on achieving the qualification through Cavalli, it’s given me the confidence to now pursue further education and maybe towards the level 7 qualification, which I don’t think I would have had unless I engaged with Cavalli, who was just so supportive, and that’s something I needed.”

Reflecting on his experience, Andy encourages others considering a career in the Health and Wellbeing sector to take the next step.

“Just give it a go. There are so many benefits to it, whether it’s to do with your own maybe personal addiction issues or you want to gain some knowledge and potentially go into the field of addiction support, I can definitely say Cavalli is a good option: extremely supportive people and a very friendly team.”

Andy’s story highlights the positive impact that education, practical experience, and supportive learning environments can have on both personal and professional growth. From returning to study after many years away from the classroom to securing a role aligned with his career aspirations, his journey demonstrates how taking that first step can create new opportunities and pathways for success.
