New Zealand Certificate in Health and Wellbeing (Social and Community Services) (Level 4) Mental Health and Addiction Support Strand

This programme supports learners to understand mental health and addiction issues and apply strategies, interventions, and tools to work alongside people and whānau in mental health and/or addiction settings.

What you will learn:

  • Support autonomy, resilience, and hope in those with mental health and addiction issues
  • Work collaboratively and apply effective communication strategies to manage impacts of stigma and discrimination
  • Apply knowledge of the history and context of Māori as tangata whenua and Te Tiriti o Waitangi to support cultural connectedness in a health and wellbeing setting
  • Demonstrate self-awareness, reflective practice, and personal leadership

Achieving this qualification will help you to:

  • Find employment in a support role such as a mental health and addiction support worker, addiction programme facilitator, caregiver, or residential support worker
  • Use your lived experience to support recovery for others with similar experience

Academic entry

Applicants must be a minimum of 16 years old to commence the programme.

Applicants are required to have initial checks to ensure they are fit and proper to provide support, specific to the context in which they work.

English language entry

All international applicants and domestic applicants for whom English is an additional language and te reo Māori is not the first language evidence of meeting English language requirements according to Rule 22 of the NZQF Programme Approval and Accreditation Rules 2022 for the level of the programme.

Fees Free

If you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident living in Rodney, Waitakere, or North Shore regions, and new to tertiary study in 2025, you may be eligible for Fees Free, covering up to $12,000 of your study costs.

The New Zealand Government will cover tuition costs for the final year of a qualification, including one-year qualifications, provided the qualification meets the Government’s eligibility criteria.
